Sam Manekshaw
Sam Manekshaw, whose full name was Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, was one of India’s greatest military leaders. He is best known for leading India to victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. He was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal.
Early Life :
• Born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar, Punjab.
• Belonged to a Parsi family.
• He studied at Sherwood College in Nainital.
• In 1934, he joined the first batch of cadets at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.
• He was known for his confidence, discipline and strong personality from a young age.
World War II
• During World War II, Manekshaw fought in Burma against Japanese forces.
• He was seriously wounded in battle.
• Despite his injuries, he continued commanding his troops.
• He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery.
• This experience made him a tough and practical military officer.
Role After Independence
After India became independent in 1947, Manekshaw played important roles in the Indian Army:
• Took part in the 1947–48 Indo-Pak war over Kashmir.
• Helped reorganize the Indian Army after partition.
• Held several senior leadership and staff positions.
• He rose steadily through the ranks because of his skill and professionalism.
1971 Indo-Pak War
In 1971, political tension increased between India and Pakistan. Millions of refugees from East Pakistan entered India due to conflict.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked Manekshaw about going to war.
He advised waiting until the army was fully prepared. He said weather, equipment, troop readiness and planning were very important.
After proper preparation, India launched military action in December 1971.
The result:
• Pakistani forces in East Pakistan surrendered.
• About 93,000 Pakistani soldiers became prisoners of war.
• Bangladesh became an independent country.
• It was one of the most decisive victories in Indian military history.
Field Marshal Rank
• In 1973, Sam Manekshaw was promoted to Field Marshal, a five-star rank.
• He was the first Indian Army officer to receive this honor. • The rank is given only for exceptional service and leadership.
